Pencil Lead Resistors647 viewsA closeup shot of one of the "resistors", with the tube of leads below it.Apr 12, 2007

Pencil Lead Resistors428 viewsHere is a shot showing all 5 "resistors". I measured one with a multimeter to be approximately 1 ohm. Using 5 leads plus the nichrome wire itself, the current flow was about 1.6A on a voltage of approximately 12V (not measured, but it is a car battery), meaning the total resistance of the circuit was about 7.5 ohms.Apr 12, 2007

Pencil Lead Resistors Styrofoam Cutting Setup372 viewsMy mom wanted me to cut some Styrofoam. I had a nichrome wire to use as the cutting element, but the only power supply I had capable of delivering the right amount of power was an emergency car battery. I used 5 mechanical pencil leads (0.9mm diameter, 60mm length) wired in series to form a high-power current-limiting resistance.Apr 12, 2007

Laptop Surgery54 viewsMy laptop was overheating so badly that the thermal protection failsafe kept kicking in and shutting it down while I was trying to do stuff. So I performed some minor surgery on it to replace the thermal compound between the CPU and the heatsink. I also did a bit of dusting :)Feb 02, 2012 at 07:32 AM
